Walls do two jobs at once here. They hold ground back and they give people somewhere to sit. Both depend on what is behind the stone, which is drainage and a footing, and neither is something you can open back up later.
Built in place, sized to the terrace rather than dropped onto it, and finished with a cap wide enough to set a drink on. Wood-burning or gas, and that gets decided before the base goes in rather than after.
A retaining wall that fails almost always failed at the back, where water built up with nowhere to go. Ours get drainage stone and a pipe behind them as a matter of course, on walls of every height.
The masonry has to be right before the appliances arrive: openings sized to the units, the counter level, and the gas and power run before anything gets faced.
